The aim of the presentation is to briefly outline the “Risk-Informed, Performance-Based” approach established in the American regulatory framework for nuclear safety. The presentation is based on the author's experience and insights gathered during the 6-month assignment at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), in the Office of the Nuclear Regulatory Research. The "Risk-Informed" concept will be presented in the following aspects: the short history and Policy foundations, the licensing and oversight processes, and the outline of the SPAR (Standardized Plant Analysis Risk) modelling convention. Moreover, the generic SPAR model being created by the author will be briefly showed, as well as a few types of useful results which can be gained after quantification. The major intent of the seminar is to show that the Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) are not just “unimaginable numbers”, but practically useful tool with broad scope of applications in the real life.
