The MANHAZ Excellence Centre

Centrum Doskonałości MANHAZ

The MANHAZ Excellence Centre was organized in 2002 within European Union Research Fifth Framework Programme. Its profile is to work out safety/failure risk analyses for various industrial facilities mainly in the context of human health/environment protection.

The EU Centre of Excellence „MANHAZ” – Management of Health and Environmental Hazards Was established in 2002 within the 5th Framework Programme of the EU at the Institute of Atomic Energy in Świerk. After merging with the Institute for Nuclear Studies, CoE MANHAZ became a part of Nuclear Energy Division of the National Centre for Nuclear Research.

The main areas of the Centre’s activities have been focused on safety and security assessment and management of chemical and nuclear installations and transport systems of dangerous goods in the aspect of minimization of consequences for people and environment caused by accidents or acts of terror. It encompasses:

  • Assessment and management of major accident risks – advanced tools and information systems; methods, models, computer programs and data bases for full scope probabilistic risk assessment of chemical plants and nuclear installations.
  • Management of chemical hazards related to: emission of chemicals, their transport and dispersion in environment, environmental and health risk assessment, models, data bases, computer systems for decision making.
  • Bayesian inference in risk assessment in running of chemical and nuclear plants; stochastic event reconstruction.
  • Software framework for developing high performance computing (HPC) packages for the consequence analysis of accident.
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics for safety and homeland security assessments, system design optimization and high-resolution 3D thermal hydraulic analysis of industrial facility components.
  • Security analysis of critical infrastructure; general vulnerability and risk assessment framework methodologies.
  • Development of computerised systems for emergency planning and response, real-time computer-aided emergency decision support systems for complex technical facilities, tools for radiological risk assessment and decision making.
