VIPERS: A SLICE OF THE UNIVERSE IN 3D AT z~1

Abstract: 

Recently the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS) released to the scientific community a dataset of ~ 90,000 spectroscopically measured galaxies at z~1, presenting in the same time the most detailed map of the 3D galaxy distribution in such a distant Universe up to date. VIPERS covers an unprecedentedly large volume (5 x 10^7 h^(-3) Mpc^3) with an effective spectroscopic sampling > 40%. With these numbers, it can be considered the state-of-the-art counterpart of "local" (z<0.2) cosmological surveys but targeting the epoch at z ~ 1. How different were galaxies 8 bln years ago in comparison to their descendants we find in our local Universe? What are the properties of the 3D cosmic structure emerging from VIPERS measurements? What can they tell us about the properties and common evolution of galaxies and underlying dark matter density field? What cosmological information can be derived from these data? In my talk I will present the highlights from the newest VIPERS results.
