Abstract:

Principle of operation of free electron lasers will be briefly outlined. The project of the POLFEEK laser planned in NCBJ will be presented. Development of a superconducting machine accelerating electrons to 20 (or 40 MeV) would be the first stage of the project. The electron beam could then be used to produce electromagnetic radiation in the teraherz (or IR, respectively) spectral range. Other applications of the beams are also possible. The presentation will consist of the following parts:

  1. Physical background of emission of synchrotron radiation, including coherent radiation.
  2. POLFELK planned technical sub-systems.
  3. Electron/electromagnetic radiation beams.

The project has been pursued already for 10 years now. Besides reporting the current status of these efforts, discussion on potential applications of the to-be-produced electron/electromagnetic radiation beams will be another important objective of the seminar. In particular the discussion will be focussed on applications related to research currently conducted in NCBJ and facilities operated/to-be-operated in the Institute.
