Abstract:

The European Spallation Source (ESS) now under accomplishment in Lund (Sweden) is to be the mightiest spallation-based source of neutrons in the world. The first neutrons are scheduled for 2019. It is expected that beams of highly-energetic neutrons will help to discover some important phenomena in nanotechnology, pharmacology, material sciences, power industry, experimental physics, nuclear physics. Their availability will also be a milestone to implement the idea of sub-critical nuclear reactors.

ESS is an European project accomplished by consortium of 17 countries, including Poland. NCBJ's contribution to development of the project will be outlined.
