5th International Conference „Cosmology School - Introduction to Cosmology”
2022.03.15 15:57 - Piotr SpinalskiCosmology School is the only school held in Poland addressed to young astronomers and physicists interested in observational cosmology. The formula of the school combines both lectures, practical workshops and student sessions. Lecture sessions will introduce theoretical foundations of the issues considered by cosmologists, but most lectures will focus on observational studies. Results of the latest research, conducted within the framework of international projects in which Polish centres also participate, will be presented. During the workshop participants will have the opportunity to work with real observational data, learning how to use tools used by scientists for their analysis, searching astronomical databases and working with large datasets within the Virtual Observatory (VO) workshop and modelling spectral energy distributions. Workshops on cosmological computer simulations – an important tool to test various theories and compare theory with observations – are also planned. As part of the student sessions, participants will have the opportunity to present the results of their own research. The topics of the School cover a wide range of issues: from the microwave background radiation, through the cosmic web of the large-scale structure of the Universe, to the evolution of galaxies and their active nuclei. There will also be dark matter and dark energy, as well as gravitational waves.
During the conference, it will be possible to meet and listen to lectures by world specialists, among others, Prof. John Peacock (University of Edinburgh), Prof. Rien van de Weijgaert (University of Groningen), Dr Clotilde Laigle (Institut d’astrophysique de Paris) or Prof. Bohdan Novosyadlyi (Ivan Franko National University of Lviv). Polish specialists will also be present – lectures have been announced by, among others, Prof. Marek Demiański of Warsaw University and Prof. Lech Sokołowski of Jagiellonian University. Workshops will be conducted, among others, by Dr Hendrik Heinl, VO specialist from the CDS, computer simulation specialist – Prof. Wojciech Hellwing from the Center for Theoretical Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and Prof. Katarzyna Małek from the NCNR Department of Astrophysics, who specialises, among others, in modelling the spectral energy distribution of galaxies. Observation workshops are also planned. They are primarily aimed at theoreticians, so that they have the opportunity – perhaps for the first time in their lives – to try their hand at a telescope.
Following the example of previous editions of the conference, also this year there will be open popular science lectures, to which the organisers cordially invite all enthusiasts of astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology. To meet the expectations of the audience, this year as many as two open lectures are planned. One lecture in Polish will be given by Prof. Marek Demiański, while the other, in English, will be given by Prof. Rien van de Weijgaert.
This will be the fifth edition of the conference in the series „Cosmology School – Introduction to Cosmology”. It will be held, as in 2017 and 2018, at the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. The conference organisers are: Astronomical Observatory of the Jagiellonian University, the National Centre for Nuclear Research, the Center for Theoretical Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Jan Kochanowski University, the Polish Astronomical Society and the Cracow Saltworks Museum in Wieliczka.
The organisers invite you to follow the conference website, also on social media, and to look at the School’s YouTube channel, where you can find, among other things, recordings of lectures from previous editions of the School.
The conference will take place from 16.07.2022 to 31.07.2022.
Registration will be open from 01.03.2022 to 31.05.2022.
