R&D works on application of thorium in nuclear power are conducted in many countries. They have arisen high hopes that safe nuclear reactors that produce no waste might be constructed, as well as that availability of thorium fuel will invalidate any concerns related to limited uranium resources. Such R&D works have also been conducted in NCBJ (and IEA, its predecessor) within framework of the “Analysis of effects of application of thorium in conventional nuclear power reactors” project financed from the Innovative Economy Operational Programme funds. Objective was to investigate a possibility to improve safety and cost-effectiveness of conventional uranium-based power reactors. Results are presented at the end of the report.
